Thank you for a great week and making sure we got to do as much diving as possible. It was a great mix of diving, relaxing, and going from place to lace. Amanda - the food was great! You were both wonderful to get to know and so easy going to live with. Thanks again for making it a trip we will always remember. (Julie) Food was great!! Great patience with neophyte sailors. Superb flexibility as situations changed. Movie night was a pleasant surprise, as was The Last Resort (Conrad) (01/05/2008)
Richard made us feel very safe. Amanda prepared fantastic meals. We left feeling revitalized and relaxed. (Don) Captain Richard taught us to be respectful toward marine life. I felt safe and going home with much more appreciation toward our environment. Amanda, our chef, provided wonderful meals in a caring way. Thanks! (Ah Rhee) (11/5/2007)
We had a great time. Crew was very friendly, they made our vacation an unforgettable experience. The food was excellent, and the sailing very exciting, a perfect time. (Norbert) Great Vacation, plenty of things to do., good mixture of snorkeling, sailing, wonderful little shore trips. Excellent food!. (Alex) (10/27/2007)
Who would have expected we'd be so comfortable on a boat for a week? Learned more than we'd imagined Thank you for a great time. (Kim & Matt 6/30/2007)
Instructor is patient and systematic in comments and instruction has thorough knowledge of boat and sailing (John); A good mixture of instruction and off oat activities. Richard knew the area well and his suggestions as to activities and restaurants gave us another flavor of the Caribbean, Much appreciated (Myja). Good instruction - focus on "best practices" Good balance between learning to sail and experiencing "cruising". (Mark) (4/14/2007)
Exceptionally well prepared boat and extraordinarily prepared captain. Lesson plan at the perfect pace, with consideration given to the effect of weather on certain skills. Captain very capable and able to handle everything. (Robert) The lesser traveled areas of Anagada were especially nice. Thanks for all you effort. I learned a lot. (Ange) (4/6/2007)
Talk about a quirk of fate, this is the trip. Eight north Texas sailors (?) arrive in BVI for our best vacation ever. We had our skipper (one of the husbands) and we were renting a 40 foot cat from a major BVI establishment. We weren’t on the boat 20 minutes at dockside when our skipper decided to cool off in the water and he promptly slipped and tore something in his lower leg --- like a serious tear. A decision was made to take him to the hospital and we would continue loading the boat. We had arranged for a “Friendly Skipper” check out as part of our charter package. Enter Richard Stalford --- the knight in shinning armor. We departed for a 3 hour review sans our skipper---he was at the hospital. Long story short we decided to ask Richard to accompany us for 5 days and since he had a brief open schedule he accepted. We departed the next morning with our original skipper (with crutches) and Richard. For the next five days we had the vacation of our lives that took us to snorkeling locations and to great island restaurants that we would have never found on our own. All of us who wanted to learn more about sailing had every opportunity to learn the correct way of sailing from Richard . He was a class act in the middle of 8 nut cases. Yes it was our trip but he imparted a true love of sailing, a great attitude and was a super captain. Our last event was a brief tour of Labe Yoseph the Morgan 462 that is owned by Richard. It is beyond description for its condition and detail. In closing a long story my wife and I plan on taking a weeks charter on the Labe Yoseph in late 07 or early 08. Peter and Sharon (03/09/07) (The trip was completed on a 40 foot Mooring Catamaran with 8 passengers plus crew)
Fantastic organization and warm reception made it a week to remember. The views and water just added to the great time. Richard knew the islands really well and Barb cooking was excellent - so much from such a small galley. Great Trip, would do it again in a heartbeat. Very impressed with knowledge, area, food, and hospitality. Attention to detail beyond great and just could not have asked for a better experience What started out for me as a doubtful vacation (Paula was never sailing for a full week and never slept on a boat before) - ended with a positive and "Let's do this again" attitude. Ross and Paula (02/25/2007)
Excellent, First class service. Worked us into boat life gradually, familiarizing us with the boat We do not want to leave. Fantastic trip with excellent guidance, instructions, and assistance/service. 6 days were not enough! We'll be back. Thanks. Erin and Jan (02/10/2007)
The boat was emasculate and in perfect working order, also it was full of unexpected extras Richard knew the waters, the land, and the people. He had great suggestions on entertainment spots and nice surprises along the way. Enjoyed the cruise and the local knowledge of the islands. Patience of the captain is truly appreciated. Will recommend Labe Yoseph to others. Steve and Moe (01/20/2007)
Truly enjoyed the company of Caption Richard and Vera as much as the experience. would love to return and maybe. This was our first experience, the whole trip was magical. It exceeded our expectations tremendously. Vera is a fantastic cook. Captain Richard taught in a way that made sense and gave tremendously more information than the courses require. It made vacationing with my family wonderful. Vera is awesome, we all had a great time. I had the time of my life! Kae, Adam, Meg, and Susan (11) (01/12/2007)
Everything was perfect. Richard was great Captain and Vera was a fantastic cook. We are still talking about what a great honeymoon we had. We were really impressed and happy with everything, from the pick-up in Anegada to the knowledge of the islands and sailing. New Years was exactly what we had hoped it would be. I'll be sure to pass your name and service along to our family and friends. Brent & Courtenay (01/03/2007)
With Thanks for a wonderful and all to short trip. With thanks for a wonderful and all to short trip. Tony & Jeannie (12/03/2006)
Enjoyed everything about the charter!
Excellent meals, Anchorages were spectacular. Boat is beautiful. The
hospitality was excellent!
Richard,
What a week aboard Labe Yoseph! Thanks for everything…..Incredible gourmet
meals, peaceful anchorages, beautiful yacht, great sailing, new dive sites,
photographs from the dives (for those of us that did not dive), snorkeling,
and exceptional hospitality.
Thanks for your patience in answering hundreds of questions on every sailing
topic. Thanks for all the good advice. It would take us pages to put it all
into words. Our vacation was truly an adventure to be remembered! Leslie
& Jeff (11/29/2006)
P.S. I’m not sure I’ll feel right on land again, it’s still moving. I kept
tripping over my shoes walking through the airport. I already miss being
barefoot, the warmth of the sun, the movement and the sound of the water
against the boat…. And of course the sight of the grill being overtaken by
flames J
Hope to sail with you again!
Thanks you so much for your awesome hospitality and attentive care. We are very thankful for the both of you (Richard and Myrt) and hope your passage back to BVI is safe and uneventful. It was a wonderful trip that we will never forget. Pete, Deborah, Jonas, & Samuel (10/07/2006 - St. Vincent and the Grenadines)
Extremely enjoyable time! Great food and company! Will definitely be recommending to friends and family, Thank you very very very much!
The boat was in wonderful condition, very well maintained. The cooking was much much more than I expected, it was incredible. The captain was extremely knowledgeable and was very helpful. Overall just an amazing experience. can't wait to do it again.
Perfect working order - immaculate! Everything was just how I imagined it would be and went perfectly.
Can't think of how it could have been better.
Lots of things were great - connecting with family, learning to sail, SCUBA making new friends. Richard is an excellent instructor and he provided us with hours and hours of sailing time and instruction - just what I wanted. Thanks for a great trip. Brian (Sr.) ( 07/24/2006)
Great Trip! I was interested and curious about sailing before and now I love it! I plan on continuing my studies after I get home and can't wait to get back on a boat. This week was not only a great time to learn to sail but also a wonderful time to spend with family and meet other new friends. Richard was great! Not only an inspiring instructor but a great planner and friend to have on board. Thanks Richard! Brian (Jr.) (07/24/2006)
I had a great time this week learning to sail. I liked how Richard was so patient with us and if we didn't get something the first time, he kept pushing us to try again. I appreciate the time you put into letting information soak in and letting us use the information while we were sailing. Thanks for everything. Dylan (07/24/02006)
This trip has been one of the my favorite trips. I had a ton of fun and the location is wonderful. I hope to come back and sailing elsewhere. Mom (07/24/2006)
This I learned: Rope = Line; Slanting = Heeling; Right of way = Whatever!, because after all, what does the boat bunny need to know anyway. Chris (07/15/2006)
Very fun time. Appreciated the local knowledge and expertise. Took us to all the great spots and very accommodating and tolerant! Great chance to practice our novice sailing skills and learn a few more. See Ya in the Sea Again! (07/15/2006)
A great week that went by much too quickly. Richard, our Captain and Dive Instructor, carried us to a number of incredible locations and dive sites. Our chef kept us well cared for with delicious meals and entertaining asides It was a fantastic experience and a memory that we will always treasure. Thanks - Zack and Wayne (05/14/06)

Hello Ellen (Ellen Steward, Steward
Yacht Charters),
Tom and I just wanted to pass on our thanks for helping us to select Richard
on Labe Yoseph. Our 5 days went very quickly, and even so, we were able to
accomplish three levels of ASA certification in that timeframe. Richard was
very patient, and is an excellent teacher of sailing skills. This crewed
charter, was very enjoyable and reassuring to us. Richard obviously takes
pride in the maintenance of his sailboat! We were honored he trusted us at
the helm! We are closer to getting our own larger sailboat now, and we are
certain our time with Richard has built our confidence in our ability to
deal with such a vessel. Again, we could not let pass the opportunity to let
you know that you have a very good charter captain at hand in Richard
Stalford. Many times we only communicate when our experiences are negative
ones, but we definitely wanted to let you know how pleased we were with our
ASA sailing training with Richard. -Tom and Mary
(3/19/06)
Dear Richard, John and I wanted to thank you for a wonderful week aboard your beautiful boat Lobe Yoseph. We learned so much and gained a lot of confidence. Your depth of knowledge about all aspect of sailing was phenomenal. your gave us a great basis for what we hope will be a major new aspect of our lives. We also get a great taste of the BVIs, excellent anchoring and restaurants. Amy & John (03/17/06)
Captain Richard was competent, friendly, knowledgeable and did a wonderful job of conveying course work to practical application. His first concern was our well being and fulfillment of all our goals. He did a wonderful job of seeing the best available sites and activities available. Allan & Cindy (03/10/06)
Great cruise and learning experience We have been sailing for 1 year and decided to take the ASA courses. Richard did a great job making sure we understood all the fundamentals and additional information to make sailing safer and more enjoyable. Great job balancing learning and having fun. Would recommend Richard for cruising or classes. Greg & Sherry (03/10/06)
Richard, Just wanted to let you know I just got off the phone with Dave at Blue Water Sailing School and told him how much we enjoyed sailing with you and felt that the experience was fantastic. I also told him if he ever needed a reference to please feel free to call us. One thing to remember, I give way to no one!! Sherry (03/04/06)
A wonderful sailing experience and education. Richard is a very patient and sensitive instructor who personalized our week to meet our needs. Our culinary needs and desires were superbly attended to, as was our diving interest. Labe Yoseph is a wonderful sailing experience. Jim & Carol (03/04/06)

Richard was a ver nice captain. Food was great. Cali 14 years old - (02/24/06)
What did you like about your experience?: The pace of learning each skill; the islands; having the opportunity to come here (BVI) instead of mainland US; living on the boat all week - Ryan ASA Class (2/3/06)
Excellent Teacher! Boat well cared for and well equipped. Answered questions outside of course parameters. Would return for more. (Eric) Fun, comfortable, good teacher, and environment. Adjusted to our needs and skill level. (Emile) (1/12/06)
The time dedicated to learning and relaxing was well distributed. It was a good learning experience without feeling overwhelmed by the information given. - Chiara, ASA Class (2/3/05)
If I was any more relaxed, my face would fall off - Carol (12/27/05)
Dear Gail (Gail at
Virgin Island Charters),
Thank you so much for the Champagne!
From the moment we boarded the yacht the first time our trip was magical.
Richard went more than an extra mile (nautical mile) to think up wonderful
experiences for us. By the end of the trip, had I been any more relaxed, my
face would have fallen off.
Richard gave us informal sailing lessons, exactly as much as we wanted, and
in between found beautiful, deserted places for us to swim and snorkel. He
took us off the beaten path exactly as we were hoping. He arranged two
surprises for us - a photo shot from the water (OK, I guess that's something
he does for everyone) and he arranged for us to be guest artists with the
house band at "The Last Resort" (That was a one-of-a-kind experience!) He
covertly smuggled our guitars from the yacht to the restaurant and the band
sprang it on us after everyone was good and drunk and ready to listen to a
couple of honeymooners play. It was great fun, and I am somewhat in awe of
Captain Richard not only for pulling it off, but for thinking it up in the
fist place!
Our chef Patti, our award winning Chef Patti, was a delight. We had plenty
of space and plenty of privacy and felt ourselves to be in expert hands We
could not have asked for a more perfect honeymoon.
Carol & Lenny (12/27/05)
Richard did excellent balance of letting me sail & assuring that everything was going well.- Peter (12/10/05)
What more could you ask for? - David (12/10/05)
I really appreciated all of the email contact to help prepare for the trip - Stacey (12/10/05)
This is totally annoying that I have nothing to whine about.... This is the first cruising in 30 years that I have definitely enjoyed. Richard was kind with out being patronizing and very aware of everything (which put me totally at ease). - Joan (12/10/05)
Had a great time relaxing and learning with our very kind and patient skipper. Richard and his extremely well equipped yacht. Thanks a lot for a great vacation and sailing experience. - Ralph (11/27/05)
Thanks for the great trip! It had a great balance of relaxing, learning, sailing, and snorkeling! I even learned to cook while learning to sail! A really great time! Thanks to Richard! - Doreen (11/27/05)
This was an excellent trip and unforgettable trip. Richard is an excellent instructor. He had a good mix of teaching and practical experience as well as time to enjoy everything BVI has to offer. He made this trip very enjoyable. I also liked the mix of learning and pleasure that made a unique and relaxing holiday. Thanks Richard - Robert (11/27/05)
I must say that I had a very nice sailing week. I started this week facing three challenges: no sailing experience, no reading before and a language barrier. Now I have important sailing knowledge and passed the two first ASA tests. I also spent a very interesting and calm week cruising in a really beautiful environment. I specially thanked Richard for his great effort to teach me and to diminish the language barrier. I think he is a very good teacher and person. The boat was complete and comfortable. - Ruben F. (11/27/2005)
Great Trip, met all my expectations, and more... Good balance of learning, having fun, and seeing new places. Richard (Captain) has a fine teaching style with lots of patience and a willingness to impart more than just the required information. His knowledge and insights are appreciated. - John (11/14/05)
Had a great time and wonderful learning experience. Richard has a strong ability to understand his students and answer truthfully and give us pro's and con's, and patients to make decisions. He made it a very comfortable time. - Gwynn (11/14/05)
This trip convinced me that living on a boat is in my future. I learned a tremendous amount in a short period of time and felt adequate time was given to practice. Richard understands you can only absorb so much so he appropriately balanced fun activities to allow absorptions. Great trip!!! - Kathi (11/14/05)
Thanks for your excellent arrangements & help with our trip! We had a great time. This is a fine yacht & in good repair. Captain Richard is meticulous in its maintenance, & a good instructor. We learned a lot. We can certainly recommend the Morgan 46." - Margaret & Rich (6/22/2005)
Great week aboard. Great Boat. Great instruction. Great company. Would recommend highly. - Richard (6/22/05, from the Broker)
Thoroughly enjoyed the week! Great experience. I really liked how Richard explained things - I found it very easy to understand him and I appreciate his patience as I took time to try all these new maneuvers, etc.... His constant encouragement also helped me be confident in trying more than I would have done otherwise! Thanks, Richard for a really fun time. - Margaret (6/22/05)
It was a great going to all the islands and getting hands on experience in sailing for our first time. Richard was always there to help with our inexperience so that we never felt like we were put in a dangerous spot. Unfortunately, we had 2 days without wind so we missed out on additional experience. The last day of sailing everything seemed to come together. - Rick (4/30/05)
Excellent experience and trailing. Richard is a great teacher and I'm walking away (or sailing away!) having gained more knowledge that I anticipated. Hopefully = my beginning of many long years sailing. Richard, thanks for a fantastic start. - Jennie (4/30/05)
What a wonderful week in BVI - a perfect blend of sailing instruction along with learning more about the culture of BVI. Richard is a wonderful instructor and we hope to be back with him to continue our learning experience this is only the beginning!!! - Stacey (4/30/05)
"What a great sailing trip and lessons. Richard gave 100% of his knowledge and expertise in sailing and we truly learned so much from him. We would go again with Richard. He dots every "i" and he's a great guy." - Private couple, April 2004.
Our charter with Richard was an exciting adventure. The weather varied from sun to squalls, with wind velocities requiring full sail to periodic reefing. The proximity of islands also allowed us to experience plenty of land effects on direction and intensity of the wind. These conditions provided opportunities for varied sailing and navigating experiences. When winds were insufficient for sailing, Richard was very accommodating in selecting interesting dive sites and local must see shore attractions. Richard not only taught us how to operation his boat and accessory equipment, but also provided input on various hull designs, sail configurations, and resulting boat performance and living comfort. Instructions and advice for consistent sailing, mooring, anchoring, docking and advance planning were comprehensive and clearly communicated. We chartered our sailing vacation with the intent of gaining hands on experience in order to apply and understand what we had read in instructional books prior to the trip. This was accomplished. We are very happy with our first sailing experience, and look forward to continue sailing. - Clay & Kellie (2/11/05)
Fun, constructive learning course. Learned a lot of interesting things about living on a boat as well as sailing. Enjoyed the places you picked for dinner and entertainment. Cathy (2/27/05)
It was a fabulous experience. BVI is magnificent. The scenery was breath taking. Richard is a very knowledgeable, kind and fun person to sail with. He was able to show us the finer spots on the island and was both a great navigator and tour guide. I highly recommend the trip and I would definitely do it again!! Especially liked spotting Marvin-the-Man-overboard during overboard drills. (Marvin is a PDF Type 2). - Susan (2/27/05)
I had a great trip and learning experience. Richard has a great deal of knowledge about BVI and sailing and was a very good instructor. I felt safe under his command and would do another trip with him. - Richard (2/27/05)
The sailing instruction was excellent. I learned a lot from you this week about sailing and about life. If you ever come across me in these waters, I will be the boat sailing with all the people laughing on board that will be my family assessing my sailing skills. Great Job!!! - Robert (2/19/05)
This trip was a great success for me. I was nervous as I started but I learned a tremendous amount. My confidence and knowledge increase as the week progressed. - Barbara (2/19/05)
Seamanship instruction was fabulous. I am a person who is almost a lifetime boater, but the practice of cruising and true seamanship is really in focus after this week. - Dan (2/11/05)
The week was memorable, very! Richard took us to places that fit well within our wants. I came on the boat to relax, which I did but I also came away with knowledge to make me a better, smarter boater. Thank you Richard. Can't wait to come back. - Karin (2/11/05)
Great week! Wonderful Instruction. Great Coffee! We'll be back. - Bill (2/11/05)
Our trip was wonderful. Your teaching style is great - you are very clear in your instructions and balance that with encouragement and humor. We got to see a lot of the BVI and relax while leaning a lot - this was also well balanced. - Leigh (1/27/05)
Thank you. We did everything I expected and more. The real value was the practical, common sense approach. I'm sure that an occasion will soon appear when Nancy and I will have worked through or avoid a situation and say to each other "Richard saved our butt!" John (1/27/05)
Thank your! Great course, great sailing, great instructor! We learned much more than the course and Richard was so patient, helpful and informative. A great blend of learning, doing, and relaxations. Thanks Again. - Nancy (1/27/05) NOTE: 3 months after their instruction, John and Nancy purchased a 38 foot Freedom and 7 months later sailed the Caribbean 1500, a 1,500 mile sailing crossing from Maryland to the BVI. They moved up their retirement! Note 2007, ran into John and Nancy in Prickly Bay, Grenada - they still are ginning ear to ear, I warmed them if they don't stop they will need surgery soon.
"This was a fantastic trip! Richard was really great. He's a terrific sailor and teacher and we feel we've made a terrific friend in the process. Neither of us had been to BVI before so the shear beauty of the area was an unexpected bonus. We are two very satisfied customers." - Sailing School, Jan. 2005
Sailing and instruction was great. My entire week was more than expected. Will come back for 106 and more. - Steve (1/1/05)
Sailing instruction" hands one and bookwork were great. The entire week was more than expected. - David (1/1/05)
Wonderful adventure that has prepared us for a life time of adventures. The captain is extremely knowledgeable and effective with instruction. I look forward to my return to BVI. - Tammy & John (12/11/04)
Captain Richard was very knowledgeable and thorough. We had a great time! Thanks for fulfilling all our goals and taking us to great snorkel sites. - Theran & Rebecca (12/11/04)
Great Week!! We learned a lot and enjoyed Richard’s company. Great Time. Learned and experienced a lot! Great fun & people aboard! - Georg & Jill (12/5/04)
The week onboard was fantastic. The learning was effortless, and I learned quite a lot. Richard is a great captain, a great teacher, and a great host. I want to come back again! - Joseph (12/5/05)
"I had a great time last week. Richard was a fantastic captain/instructor/host. He made learning to sail relatively effortless and a lot of fun, and added immensely to our enjoyment of the week. It was one of my best vacations ever." - Sailing School (Nov. 2004)
"Our vacation was fantastic overall. We loved the BVI. Snorkeling was a big hit, and both kids felt that the trip was 'awesome.' They enjoyed the sailing, the time ashore playing on various beaches, and watching movies with popcorn on the yacht after dinner. They enjoyed it so much that they've asked for another charter this summer! Richard was very knowledgeable and I found him to be dedicated and generally patient teacher. I learned a great deal and would happily recommend him to others, particularly those who are learning to sail with other family members. He instinctively suggested just the right balance! The yacht was in great shape. The center cockpit with a removable, clear enclosure is also a real selling point in my book." - Family charter (March 2004)
